Nuts for Asthma Relief
Brazil nuts may help stop an asthma attack and help the patient breathe easy.

Sleep for Better Health
Here are just 4 reasons you should get eight hours of sleep every night (from St. Joseph Health System):

1.  Sleeping too little can mean overeating. During sleep the body's level of the hormone leptin rises, signaling a decreased need for food. During waking hours, leptin levels decrease, signaling food is needed.  (This is also why it is important to eat a healthy breakfast).

2.  Lack of sleep decreases your body's ability to use insulin.  Long-term insulin resistance can lead to type 2 diabetes.

3.  Inadequate sleep can lead to high blood pressure.  Blood pressure decreases during sleep, so the more hours you sleep, the more you benefit from lowered blood pressure.

4.  People who sleep between 6 and 8 hours per night are less likely to be depressed than people who sleep less than 6 hours nightly.

Trans Fats
USA Today reports that the obsession with trans fats has gone too far.  Trans fats are simply being replaced with other unhealthful oils.  66% of adults in the United States are overweight or obese. The truth is Americans' diets are so bad for their hearts because of eating too much food, consuming too many calories, eating junk food, and not enough vegetables and fruits.

The truth is partially hydrogenated oils like soybean are unhealthy because of the chemical process used to create a "preservative" effect.  Soybeans are also not good for our body (see December 2006 E-newsletter for more information). Our body has to process all of these chemically altered products that are not natural to the body.  The healthy oils are olive oil, butter (unsalted and pure), and organic, virgin, unprocessed coconut oil. Just remember, oils still contain a lot of calories, so use sparingly.

Wanna Help?
March for Meals is a public awareness and fundraising campaign sponsored by the Meals on Wheels Association of America focusing on senior hunger throughout the U.S.  Over 26% of home-delivered meals are for participants 85 years and older.  Seniors, age 85 and older, are the most rapidly growing age group in our population.  Find out more  http://www.mowaa.org/
